CONGRATULATING ISABELLA GARCES FOR WINNING 1ST PLACE IN THE MIDDLE

SCHOOL DIVISION OF THE VFW’S "PATRIOT’S PEN" ESSAY CONTEST IN THE STATE

OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Patriot’s Pen is a VFW-sponsored youth essay contest in which youngsters

are given the opportunity to express their views on a patriotic-related theme within a 300-400

word essay. Last year, more than 120,000 students participated in the contest. Winners at the state

level can go on to win prizes at the national level ranging from $500 to $5000; and

     WHEREAS, Isabella Garces is a talented and bright 7th grade student at Vincent J.

Gallagher Middle School in Smithfield, Rhode Island. The essay Isabella submitted in the

"Patriot’s Pen" essay contest, entitled "America’s Greatest Gift To My Generation" is a historical

exploration of the positive role "diversity" has played in creating a vibrant and tolerant nation;

and

     WHEREAS, Isabella’s essay won 1st place for the State of Rhode Island, Middle School

Division, in the Patriot’s Pen Contest, and earned a third-place finish in the national finals in

Washington D.C. Isabella had the honor of reading her essay at the State Award Banquet and

earned $4000 in prize money; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Isabella Garces for winning 1st place in the Middle

School Division of the VFW’s "Patriot’s Pen" essay contest in the State of Rhode Island. We

wish her continued success in all her future endeavors; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Isabella Garces.
