THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, Service to others is a hallmark of American character and central to how we |
2 | meet our challenges; and |
3 | WHEREAS, The nation's towns and cities are increasingly turning to national service and |
4 | volunteerism as a cost-effective strategy to meet their needs; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Foster Grandparent Volunteers address the most pressing challenges facing |
6 | our communities, mentoring students for the jobs of the 21st century; and |
7 | WHEREAS, National service expands economic opportunity by creating sustainable, |
8 | resilient communities and providing education and nurturing skills to our children in schools and |
9 | daycare centers; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Foster Grandparent Volunteers serve in 25 sites within West Warwick, |
11 | Coventry, Warwick, Cranston, North Smithfield, and Woonsocket. Fifty-five volunteers bolster |
12 | the civic, neighborhood and faith-based organizations that are so vital to our economic and social |
13 | well-being; and |
14 | WHEREAS, National service represents a unique public-private partnership that invests |
15 | in community solutions and leverages non-federal resources to strengthen community impact and |
16 | increase the return to taxpayer dollars; and |
17 | WHEREAS, The Corporation for National and Community Service shares a priority with |
18 | local leaders nationwide to engage citizens, improve lives and strengthen communities, and is |
19 | joining with the National League of Cities, the National Association of Counties, the Cities of |

1 | Service, and local leaders across the country in support of National Service Recognition Day on |
2 | April 5, 2018; now, therefore be it |
3 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
4 | Providence Plantations hereby proclaims April 5, 2018, to be "National Service Recognition Day" |
5 | in the State of Rhode Island and encourages residents to recognize the positive impact of national |
6 | service within our communities and to thank those who serve and find ways to give back to their |
7 | communities; and be it further |
8 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
9 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Diane Richardson, Director of the Foster |
10 | Grandparent Program in West Warwick. |
