CONGRATULATING KATHERINE GREGG ON HER INDUCTION INTO THE RHODE | |
ISLAND JOURNALISM HALL OF FAME | |

1 | WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Journalism Hall of Fame was established in 1985 by the |
2 | Rhode Island Press Association "to honor journalists who have been influential in their |
3 | profession." Members of the Hall of Fame are chosen by a committee of the press association and |
4 | approved by the board. One of this year's eminently deserving recipients is Providence Journal |
5 | State House writer Katherine Gregg; and |
6 | WHEREAS, A native of New York, Ms. Gregg worked in Vermont before taking a |
7 | position at the Providence Journal. In the mid-'80s, she began the State House beat; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Ms. Gregg's career at The Journal has now spanned nearly four decades, |
9 | with more than thirty of those years on Smith Hill. Her reputation for being a tenacious watchdog |
10 | combined with her immense work ethic and vast knowledge of state government has earned her |
11 | the respect of all who serve and the gratitude of those who observe and follow her stories, |
12 | political scene columns, and tweets; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Ms. Gregg's accomplishments and her comprehensive institutional |
14 | knowledge has evolved into the State House beat being informally known as "The Katherine |
15 | Gregg School of Journalism"; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Respected throughout the industry, Ms. Gregg has earned myriad |
17 | commendations including being a past winner of the Sevellon Brown Award for "meritorious |
18 | public service" and a recipient of the Master Reporter lifetime achievement award from the New |
19 | England Society of Newspaper Editors. In addition, she was a contributing writer to The Journal's |

1 | Pulitzer Prize-winning 1994 series on corruption in the state courts; and |
2 | WHEREAS, By informing and educating the people of Rhode Island in her various |
3 | journalistic capacities, Katherine Gregg has had a significant impact on those who serve in |
4 | government and on the transparency of our government's functions and she is eminently worthy |
5 | of the prestigious honor and recognition she has been afforded; now, therefore be it |
6 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
7 | Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Katherine Gregg on her induction into the Rhode |
8 | Island Journalism Hall of Fame, and we extend our best wishes for her continued success, health |
9 | and fulfillment; and be it further |
10 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
11 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Katherine Gregg. |
