1 | WHEREAS, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease of the central nervous |
2 | system, affecting 2.3 million people worldwide; and |
3 | WHEREAS, According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the disease generally |
4 | strikes people in the prime of life, between the ages of 20 through 50. The cause and course of the |
5 | often debilitating symptoms of MS remain unknown and no cure currently exists; and |
6 | WHEREAS, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has been committed for more than |
7 | 70 years to a world free of MS, heightening public knowledge about and insight into the disease; |
8 | and |
9 | WHEREAS, Since 1946, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has been a driving force |
10 | of MS research, relentlessly pursuing prevention, treatments and a cure, and has invested more |
11 | than $900 million in groundbreaking research; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Funds raised through the National Multiple Sclerosis Society fuel $42.1 |
13 | million dollars of funding for 380 research projects at the best medical centers, universities and |
14 | other institutions throughout the United States and abroad, leading to many breakthroughs in the |
15 | treatment of MS; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Stopping MS in its tracks, restoring what has been lost, and ending MS |
17 | forever is the mission of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and one that all Americans and |
18 | Rhode Islanders should support; now, therefore be it |
19 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |

1 | Providence Plantations hereby recognizes the importance of finding the cause and cure of MS and |
2 | expresses its appreciation for the dedication that the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has |
3 | shown toward creating a world free of MS; and be it further |
4 | RESOLVED, That this House hereby recognizes May 30, 2018, as “World MS Day” in |
5 | the State of Rhode Island; and be it further |
6 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
7 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Peter A. Galligan, Chairman of the Board, |
8 | National Multiple Sclerosis Society. |
