H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

HONORING MR. STEVE BROSNIHAN, A 2018 JEFFERSON AWARD WINNER, FOR

CREATING AND FOUNDING THE "GOOD NIGHT LIGHTS" PROGRAM IN SUPPORT OF

HASBRO CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

     WHEREAS, Mr. Steve Brosnihan, a talented cartoonist from Bristol, started the practice

of flashing lights to the children at Hasbro Children's Hospital as a way distracting them and their

families from the day to day difficulties of fighting various illnesses; and

     WHEREAS, This unique and creative tradition began in 2010 when Mr. Brosnihan, after

volunteering for a day at the hospital, flashed a light from his bicycle from a street corner on his

way home. He had told the children to look out their windows for his light to flash. It was his way

of saying good night to the children; and

     WHEREAS, Since that moment of inspiration, Mr. Brosnihan has reached out to local

businesses and community leaders urging them to flash their lights in support of the children at

Hasbro Children's Hospital. Beginning in 2015, many Providence businesses, Brown University,

nursing facilities, hotels, police and fire departments, and police cruisers daily at 8:30 p.m., flash

their lights in support of the children at Hasbro Children's Hospital. In addition to Providence, the

communities of East Providence and Warwick have also joined in and lent their support to this

wonderful project; and

     WHEREAS, Governor Gina M. Raimondo has announced that the Rhode Island State

House would begin its participation by flashing lights on its dome every Wednesday night at 8:30

p.m., for thirty seconds in support of the Good Night Lights program; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Steve Brosnihan was awarded the Jefferson Award for Public Service in

2018 in recognition of his many years of devoted and tireless volunteer service to Hasbro

Children's Hospital and for creating the "Good Night Lights" program; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby honors and thanks Mr. Steve Brosnihan for creating and founding

the "Good Night Lights" program in support of Hasbro Children's Hospital; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Steve Brosnihan.
