EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF MARK S. SPANGLER | |

1 | WHEREAS, Mark S. Spangler of Wakefield passed away on Friday, May 25, 2018. He |
2 | was the beloved husband of Mary A. Donnelly; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Mr. Spangler was born in Long Beach, California, the son of William S. |
4 | Spangler and the late Thalia J. Spangler. Mark graduated from Rogers High School and the |
5 | University of Rhode Island, where he was a member of the nationally ranked URI Debate Team. |
6 | He later graduated from the University of the California Hastings College of the Law in 1973. He |
7 | also served our nation with honor during the Vietnam War as a Sergeant with the United States |
8 | Army Rangers; and |
9 | WHEREAS, After graduating from law school, Mr. Spangler returned to Rhode Island to |
10 | practice law. He was a distinguished member of the Rhode Island and California State Bar |
11 | Associations. His many accomplishments as a practicing attorney include the founding of the |
12 | legal clinic, Sympatico, formerly of Wakefield, and serving with distinction as the Town Solicitor |
13 | of South Kingstown. Most recently, he had volunteered at the Johnnycake Center helping to |
14 | prepare and files taxes for those in need of assistance; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Mr. Spangler was a proud member of the Vietnam Veterans of America |
16 | Chapter 325 for more than forty years, serving as Secretary and Treasurer. He also served as |
17 | Secretary of the Rhode Island Veterans Council. He was the architect and driving force behind |
18 | the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Garden at Dale Carlia Corner and for many years devoted his |
19 | weekend mornings to gardening and maintaining it for the public; and |
20 | WHEREAS, In addition to his wife and father, Mr. Spangler leaves behind his daughter, |

1 | Christine Hoerning, and her husband, Rainer and their three children, Anna Sophia, Lucas and |
2 | Eric, and his daughter, Mary Eileen Taylor, and her husband, Daniel and their two children, |
3 | Daniel James and Abby Mae Thalia. He also leaves behind his brother, Reed Spangler and his |
4 | wife, Yvonne, along with many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family |
5 | members, and many friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Neal Spangler; and |
6 | WHEREAS, In his free time, Mr. Spangler loved tending to his yard and garden in the |
7 | company of his devoted cat, LB. He also enjoyed collecting stamps, and, most of all, spending |
8 | time with his grandchildren. He leaves an enduring legacy as a loving husband, father, brother, |
9 | grandfather, friend, and counselor; now, therefore be it |
10 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode and Providence |
11 | Plantations hereby extends its condolences to the Spangler family on the passing of Mark S. |
12 | Spangler; and be it further |
13 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
14 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mary A. Donnelly and Family. |
