EXTENDING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF FORMER STATE SENATOR, THE | |
HONORABLE SANDRA K. HANAWAY | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with profound sadness and regret that this Senate has learned of the |
2 | passing of the Honorable Sandra K. Hanaway, a former State Senator, the beloved wife of the late |
3 | Honorable Paul E. Hanaway, also a former State Senator, and the cherished mother of four |
4 | daughters, Maureen, Cristie, Deborah, and Sandy. She was also the very proud grandmother of |
5 | eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and ten step-great- |
6 | grandchildren, and the devoted companion of John J. Monaghan; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Born in Pawtucket, Sandra Hanaway was the daughter of the late Irving and |
8 | Irene Platt. She was a graduate of Pawtucket's East High School, now Tolman, and attended |
9 | Bryant College; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Upon her marriage in 1954, Sandra and Paul moved to Arlington, Virginia, |
11 | were he served in the military and Sandra worked as a secretary in the Navy Department. After |
12 | his discharge, the couple returned to Rhode Island, making their home in Cumberland, and |
13 | becoming the owners of the G. Frank Hanaway Insurance Agency; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Deeply committed to her community, Mrs. Hanaway began her public |
15 | service as a member of the board of the Cumberland Public Library, and in 1991, was |
16 | successfully elected to the State Senate, a position she held for three terms before stepping down |
17 | in 1997; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Hanaway was always a whirlwind of activity and action. In addition to |
19 | her family and public service, she was devoted to her faith, loved to ski, was an avid bicyclist and |

1 | golfer, enjoyed summers in Martha's Vineyard, traveled extensively, and rarely missed eating |
2 | breakfast with her many friends at Everybody's Favorite in Cumberland; and |
3 | WHEREAS, The Honorable Sandra Hanaway was not only the family matriarch, but also |
4 | the heart and soul of her family. Her devotion and sincerity will forever be indelibly imprinted on |
5 | the lives and in the cherished memories of her entire family and many, many friends, and her |
6 | service to the people of this state was commendable. She will be dearly missed; now, therefore be |
7 | it |
8 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
9 | hereby expresses our deepest sympathies on the passing of the Honorable Sandra K. Hanaway; |
10 | and be it further |
11 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
12 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Maureen Aveno and Family, Cristie Hanaway |
13 | and Family, Deborah McAneny and Family, Sandy Lariviere and Family, and John J. Monaghan. |
