EXPRESSING PROFOUND SYMPATHY ON THE PASSING OF SISTER LORRAINE | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of Sister |
2 | Lorraine MacPherson, SUSC, (Sr. Therese Joseph), a resident of Jeanne Jugan Residence; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, Sr. Lorraine was the daughter of the late |
4 | Robert and Ida MacPherson, and the sister of the late Robert MacPherson. She is survived by her |
5 | Holy Union Sisters, and her sister-in-law, Lorraine MacPherson, a niece, nephew, grandniece and |
6 | grandnephew; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Sr. Lorraine grew up in Chelsea, where she met the Holy Union Sisters |
8 | while attending Assumption School. Upon graduation, she entered the Holy Union Sisters and |
9 | pronounced her final vows on July 26, 1958; and |
10 | WHEREAS, After studying at Sacred Heart Teacher Training School, Sr. Lorraine |
11 | attained her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Catholic Teachers’ College, and her |
12 | Master's degree in Religious Education from St. Michael College in Vermont. She continued her |
13 | studies in religious education at Emmanuel College and Cardinal Stritch College; and |
14 | WHEREAS, From 1952 through 1970, Sr. MacPherson taught in elementary schools |
15 | staffed by the Holy Union Sisters in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In addition, she |
16 | became coordinator of religious education programs in several parishes in Central Falls and |
17 | Pawtucket for many years; and |
18 | WHEREAS, In 1997, Sr. MacPherson became a pastoral bereavement minister at Keefe |
19 | Funeral Home in Lincoln, and brought communion and led the rosary to housebound residents at |

1 | Forand Manor, where she resided; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Due to failing health, in April of 2016, Sr. MacPherson moved to Jeanne |
3 | Jugan Residence where she visited other residents and prayed with them; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Sister Lorraine MacPherson was a kind and gentle soul who has left this |
5 | world a far better place because of her life’s work. Her devotion uplifted and enriched the lives of |
6 | all who knew her, and her compassion was boundless and an inspiration to us all; now, therefore |
7 | be it |
8 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
9 | hereby expresses our deepest sympathies on the passing of Sister Lorraine MacPherson, SUSC; |
10 | and be it further |
11 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
12 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Lorraine MacPherson and Family. |
