CONGRATULATING VIANSA PORTESI ON BEING SELECTED AS THE 2018 | |
"DISTINGUISHED YOUNG WOMAN" FOR RHODE ISLAND | |

1 | WHEREAS, The Distinguished Young Women program, previously known as America's |
2 | Junior Miss, was founded in 1958, and is the largest and oldest national scholarship program for |
3 | high school girls. Its goal is to provide young women with "a transformative experience that |
4 | promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership and talent"; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Viansa Portesi, the daughter of Thomas Portesi and Lori McKinsey and a |
6 | senior at LaSalle Academy, was named the Distinguished Young Woman of Rhode Island at a |
7 | statewide event held on January 14, 2018. Participants were evaluated in the areas of Scholastics, |
8 | Interview, Talent, Fitness, and Self-Expression; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Viansi plans to major in political science at the University of Alabama, |
10 | where she has earned a four-year renewable, full-tuition scholarship from the Distinguished |
11 | Young Women program. In addition, throughout the next year, she will represent our state at |
12 | various functions and will serve as a role model to young people "by spreading the program's |
13 | national outreach message of 'Be Your Best Self'"; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Throughout its 60-year history, the recipients of this award have clearly |
15 | demonstrated that they are making remarkable contributions to their communities and our state |
16 | and deserve all the praise and appreciation that we can give them; now, therefore be it |
17 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
18 | hereby congratulates Viansa Portesi on being named the 2018 "Distinguished Young Woman" of |
19 | Rhode Island and wishes her the very best at the 61st National Finals to become the Distinguished |

1 | Young Woman of America for 2018, to be held on June 28, 29, 30, in Mobile, Alabama; and be it |
2 | further |
3 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
4 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Viansa Portesi. |
