S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING VIANSA PORTESI ON BEING SELECTED AS THE 2018

"DISTINGUISHED YOUNG WOMAN" FOR RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, The Distinguished Young Women program, previously known as America's

Junior Miss, was founded in 1958, and is the largest and oldest national scholarship program for

high school girls. Its goal is to provide young women with "a transformative experience that

promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership and talent"; and

     WHEREAS, Viansa Portesi, the daughter of Thomas Portesi and Lori McKinsey and a

senior at LaSalle Academy, was named the Distinguished Young Woman of Rhode Island at a

statewide event held on January 14, 2018. Participants were evaluated in the areas of Scholastics,

Interview, Talent, Fitness, and Self-Expression; and

     WHEREAS, Viansi plans to major in political science at the University of Alabama,

where she has earned a four-year renewable, full-tuition scholarship from the Distinguished

Young Women program. In addition, throughout the next year, she will represent our state at

various functions and will serve as a role model to young people "by spreading the program's

national outreach message of 'Be Your Best Self'"; and

     WHEREAS, Throughout its 60-year history, the recipients of this award have clearly

demonstrated that they are making remarkable contributions to their communities and our state

and deserve all the praise and appreciation that we can give them; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby congratulates Viansa Portesi on being named the 2018 "Distinguished Young Woman" of

Rhode Island and wishes her the very best at the 61st National Finals to become the Distinguished

Young Woman of America for 2018, to be held on June 28, 29, 30, in Mobile, Alabama; and be it

further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Viansa Portesi.
