S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

WELCOMING THE NARRAGANSETT COUNCIL OF THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA

TO THE RHODE ISLAND SENATE AS THEY PRESENT THEIR 2017 "REPORT TO THE

STATE", AND THANKING THEM FOR ALL OF THE GOOD WORK THEY DO ON A

DAILY BASIS IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, The Narragansett Council, Boy Scouts of America, was founded on

2

September 6th, 1910 and was chartered in 1911. Since 1910, the Narragansett Council has made

3

an immense difference in the lives of countless young people in the State of Rhode Island. They

4

have helped to positively shape the moral development of the youth of our State and have helped

5

to prepare them to be future leaders, to make wise ethical decisions in their positions of authority,

6

and have inculcated within them the values of the Scout Oath and Law; and

7

     WHEREAS, The Narragansett Council works tirelessly to be accessible to all Rhode

8

Islanders, regardless of their income or social status. In particular, they work hard to reach out to

9

disadvantaged families within our urban communities. Last year, 1,100 youngsters were assisted

10

by the Narragansett Council; and

11

     WHEREAS, The Narragansett Council makes a positive impact in the lives of countless

12

people within every single community in our State. Last year, 4,000 volunteers donated 80,695

13

hours of community service. In the Council’s annual "Scouting for Food" drive, close to 218,000

14

pounds of food was collected and given to local food pantries; and

15

     WHEREAS, Summer camps are a vital and integral part of the scouting experience. The

16

Narragansett Council runs eight camps including Camp Aquapaug, Buck Hill Scout Reservation,

17

Camp Buxton, Cub World at Buck Hill, Cachalot Scout Reservation, Champlin Scout

18

Reservation, Sandsland, and Camp Yawgoog. Last summer, 3,168 Boy Scouts and more than

3,000 Cub Scouts and their families attended Narragansett Council summer camps. Additionally,

2

more than 150 Narragansett Scouts attended the National Jamboree where they camped with

3

scouts from all corners of the United States. Also, close to 50 scouts attended a High Adventure

4

Base at the Philmont Reservation, where they took part in a 12 day backpacking journey; and

5

     WHEREAS, Today the Narragansett Council serves 23 Massachusetts cities and towns in

6

addition to serving the State of Rhode Island. The Narragansett Council has approximately

7

26,000 youth members and Learning for Life participants and has more than 5,000 volunteers

8

within their Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturing and Exploring organizations. The Council’s

9

75 percent retention with its youngsters is proof of the Council’s success and shows that young

10

participants and their families highly value the positive experiences and enriching educational

11

opportunities the Narragansett Council provides for them as they help to prepare their children to

12

lead successful lives and make a positive impact in their communities; now, therefore be it

13

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

14

hereby welcomes the Narragansett Council, Boy Scouts of America to the Rhode Island Senate as

15

they present their 2017 "Report to the State", and thanks them for all of the good work they do on

16

a daily basis in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further

17

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

18

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Tim McCandless, Scout Executive and

19

CEO of the Narragansett Council, Boy Scouts of America.
