S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING MAY 5, 2018, TO BE "RHODE ISLAND OPEN TAEKWONDO

CHAMPIONSHIP DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Taekwondo is a Korean martial art developed during the 1940's and 50's by

martial artists with broad experience in the different martial arts including karate and other

Chinese and Korean martial arts traditions. Taekwondo places a special emphasis on head-height

kicks, jumping and spinning kicks, and a variety of fast kicking techniques; and

     WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Open Taekwondo Championship was initiated thirty-four

years ago by Grandmaster Jin Sup Hong; and

     WHEREAS, This championship has been a vital and outstanding feature of the martial

arts sports' scene in Rhode Island. It has fostered the practice of the Korean art of Taekwondo

within the State and has enriched the cultural diversity of Rhode Island; and

     WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Open Taekwondo Championship is a prestigious event

that has significant stature in New England and has hosted thousands of Rhode Island and New

England competitors over the past thirty-four years; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby proclaims May 5, 2018, to be "Rhode Island Open Taekwondo Championship Day" in the

State of Rhode Island. We wish them a most exciting and successful championship; and be it

further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Grand Master Jin R. Hong.
