S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING DESTINY MONTEIRO ON BEING NAMED THE 2018 "YOUTH OF

THE YEAR" BY THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS THROUGHOUT RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, The Boys & Girls Clubs of America's statewide "Youth of the Year" Award

2

began in 1947 and is the most prestigious honor a club member can receive. Youth of the Year

3

winners "embody the values of leadership and service, academic excellence and healthy

4

lifestyles." Each year, the Boys & Girls Clubs select a local member to be their "Youth of the

5

Year" and those winners compete in the Statewide "Youth of the Year" competition, with the

6

winner receiving a $5,000 scholarship award; and

7

     WHEREAS, Destiny Monteiro is a senior at Shea High School. She is enrolled in AP and

8

Honors classes, holds a 4.1 grade point average and is a member of both the National Honor

9

Society and the Rhode Island Honor Society. She is currently ranked fifth out of a class of 231,

10

and plans on attending Rhode Island College after graduation; and

11

     WHEREAS, Ms. Monteiro is a member of the Keystone Club, a Boys & Girls Club teen

12

leadership development club that participates in numerous charitable endeavors. She has

13

participated in numerous neighborhood cleanup days, serves as a member of the Pawtucket

14

Mayoral Youth Commission, and has volunteered her time and energy in support of numerous

15

additional volunteer activities; and

16

     WHEREAS, In recognition of Destiny Monteiro's sterling record of academic success

17

and achievements and her exemplary record of community service, she has been named the 2018

18

"Youth of the Year" by the Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Rhode Island. Ms. Monteiro praised

19

the Boys & Girls Clubs stating that she "would not be who I am today" without the opportunities

provided to her by her local club. She went on to say "The Club is a place I call home, where I

2

feel safe, and I am so grateful for that. The staff have always been there for me and have helped

3

me overcome so many obstacles in my life. I will never forget the guidance, encouragement, and

4

support I received here"; now, therefore be it

5

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

6

hereby congratulates Destiny Monteiro on being named the 2018 "Youth of the Year" by the

7

Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Rhode Island and wishes her continued success in all her future

8

endeavors; and be it further

9

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

10

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Destiny Monteiro.
