CONGRATULATING JAMESTOWN TEACHER CHARLENE TUTTLE FOR BEING

NAMED THE 2019 RHODE ISLAND TEACHER OF THE YEAR

     WHEREAS, Charlene Tuttle, a 6th grade social studies and science teacher at the Lawn

2

School in Jamestown, has been named the 2019 Rhode Island Teacher of the Year. The Teacher

3

of the Year program was begun by President Dwight D. Eisenhower when he had the idea of

4

selecting a teacher of the year annually from each state as a way to bring honor and recognition to

5

the teaching profession. President Eisenhower strongly believed that teachers were the "nurturers

6

of the American dream"; and

7

     WHEREAS, Ms. Tuttle, an educator for more than 25 years with extensive teaching

8

experience in Providence, Central Falls, and Santa Ana, California, is an innovative and

9

passionate teaching professional who cares deeply about her students. She has the unique ability

10

to make the crucial teaching of the STEM subjects, science, technology, engineering and

11

mathematics, come alive in her classroom. She also has a knack for exploring projects in her

12

classroom that are fun, interesting, hands-on and work-based, and relatable to the daily lives of

13

her students and their future goals and aspirations; and

14

     WHEREAS, Under her guidance and direction, Ms. Tuttle's students have raised salmon

15

eggs and chickens, planted seeds, and learned about hydroponic gardening and how to build their

16

own underwater robots, which they got to test in a pool. She has also created and run after-school

17

coding workshops, and has collaborated with Roger Williams University and aquaculture

18

businesses to study the local environment and seek out ways to protect it and preserve our vital

19

natural resources; and

     WHEREAS, In addition, Ms. Tuttle has extensive statewide experience in issues related

2

to professional curriculum development. She has previously served as a member of the Rhode

3

Island State Leadership Team for the development of Next Generation Science Standards. As the

4

Teacher of the Year, Ms. Tuttle will work with the Rhode Island Department of Education in

5

2018-2019 to help develop policy, lead teacher training, and support all Rhode Island teachers;

6

now, therefore be it

7

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

8

hereby congratulates Ms. Charlene Tuttle for being named the 2019 Rhode Island Teacher of the

9

Year. We thank Ms. Tuttle for her tireless devotion to her students and our state, and we wish her

10

continued success in all her future endeavors; and be it further

11

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

12

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Charlene Tuttle.
