S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF HONORARY CONSUL OF

PORTUGAL, JOHN CARLOS MARTINS

     WHEREAS, It is with immense sadness that this Senate has learned of the untimely

2

passing of the Honorable John Carlos Martins; and

3

     WHEREAS, John Carlos Martins, born in Portugal, the Azores, in the parish of the

4

Altares, Angra do Heroísmo, was a distinguished member of the Portuguese-American

5

community in Southern California. He had a long and exemplary public service career, serving

6

with honor, and integrity as a Councilman from 2001 to 2003, and as the Mayor of Artesia, Los

7

Angeles County from 2004 to 2010; and

8

     WHEREAS, Mr. Martins also served with distinction as the Honorary Consul of

9

Portugal, a position he was appointed to in 2015, and held until his passing. In this capacity Mr.

10

Martin was a guest during a recent visit to California by the Portuguese Prime Minister, António

11

Costa. Mr. Martins was also a loving husband to his wife, Karen Martins, a doting father to his

12

children, Cole, Kyle, and Chelsea, and a devoted son to his mother, Lenia Jacinto; and

13

     WHEREAS, Mr. Martins was also an active member of the Artesia Divino Espirito Santo

14

(D.E.S.) Portuguese Hall, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of

15

important Portuguese cultural traditions. He also served as its President for many terms; and

16

     WHEREAS, Mr. Martins was a talented musician and successful entrepreneur. He was a

17

beloved figure within the Portuguese-American community in California and will be sorely

18

missed by his loved ones and many friends and colleagues; now, therefore be it

19

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby expresses its deepest condolences on the passing of the Honorable John Carlos Martins;

2

and be it further

3

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

4

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mrs. Karen Martins and Family.
