RELATING TO BUSINESSES AND PROFESSIONS - BOARD OF MEDICAL LICENSURE

AND DISCIPLINE

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Lima, Bennett, Corvese, and Williams

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 5-37 of the General Laws entitled "Board of Medical Licensure and

Discipline" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

     5-37-2.2. Reciprocal licensure.

     (a) The board shall license an applicant to practice medicine if the applicant:

5

     (1) Became licensed or certified as a physician in another jurisdiction under requirements

6

that the board determines are substantially equivalent to the licensing requirements of this

7

chapter;

8

     (2) Is in good standing under the laws of the other jurisdiction;

9

     (3) Submits an application, on a form prescribed by the board, presenting the facts which

10

entitle the applicant to practice under this chapter; and

11

     (4) Pays a nonrefundable application fee in a total amount as set forth in ยง 23-1-54.

     (b) The board shall adopt, amend, and rescind rules and regulations, with the approval of

13

the director, necessary to carry out the provisions of this section.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

EXPLANATION

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

AND DISCIPLINE

     This act would require the Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline to provide for

2

reciprocal licensure of physicians from other jurisdictions under certain conditions, and in

3

connection therewith, requires the board to promulgate applicable rules and regulations.

4

     This act would take effect upon passage.
