	H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N
	PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF MAY TO BE "MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS MONTH"
	IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND AND URGING ALL RHODE ISLAND MOTORISTS
	TO AVOID DISTRACTED DRIVING

1	WHEREAS, Approximately 8.4 million motorcycles are registered in the United States
2	and there are approximately 28,690 motorcycles registered in Rhode Island. Motorcycle riding is
3	a popular form of transportation enjoyed by about fourteen percent of the American people; and
4	WHEREAS, Motorcycles provide a more efficient mode of transportation than cars or
5	trucks. Motorcycles use up fewer resources, cause less wear and tear on our roads and highways,
6	and increase available parking spaces; and
7	WHEREAS, Unfortunately, distracted driving poses grave dangers to other motorists,
8	especially motorcyclists. Distractions can be any activity that takes a drivers focus off the task of
9	driving, including eating and drinking, talking or texting on the phone, and numerous other
10	distractions, all of which pose serious dangers to the motorcycle driving public. In 2016, 3,450
11	lives were lost due to incidents involving distracted driving, and in 2015, 391,000 people were
12	injured in crashes that involved distracted driving; now, therefore be it
13	RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
14	Providence Plantations hereby proclaims the Month of May to be "Motorcycle Awareness
15	Month" in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further

1	RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
2	transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Paul Bond, President of the Rhode Island
3	Motorcycle Association.
