H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

WELCOMING AND CONGRATULATING DR. IOANNIS MIAOULIS ON BECOMING THE

11TH PRESIDENT OF ROGER WILLIAMS UNIVERSITY

     WHEREAS, On Wednesday February 13, 2019, the Roger Williams University Board of

Trustees announced the selection of Ioannis Miaoulis to become the 11th President of Roger

Williams University; and

     WHEREAS, Originally from Greece, Dr. Miaoulis holds three degrees from Tufts

University, a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering, a Master's degree in

economics, and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. He also received a Master’s degree in

mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and

     WHEREAS, Holding myriad positions during his impressive career, Dr. Miaoulis had

served as the Boston Museum of Science's President and Director since 2003. During his tenure

at the museum, he is credited with overseeing the museum's largest-ever capital campaign; and

     WHEREAS, Prior to his tenure at the Museum, Dr. Miaoulis served as Dean of the

engineering school at Tufts University and is a longtime advocate of science education; and

     WHEREAS, Held in the highest regard by his peers, Dr. Miaoulis was elected to the

Tufts University Board of Trustees, the Wellesley College Board of Trustees, and was a

Presidential Appointee to the National Board of Museum and Library Services; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Miaoulis has also earned a plethora of awards and recognitions

including, the Presidential Young Investigator Award, the Allan MacLeod Cormack Award for

Excellence in Collaborative Research, the William P. Desmond Award for Outstanding

Contributions to Public Education, and Tufts University Alumni Association’s Outstanding

Service Award, to name but a few. In addition, he has published more than 100 research papers,

and holds two patents; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Miaoulis is eminently deserving of the leadership and trust he has been

afforded, and his unmitigated faith in education, unwavering determination, and work ethic has

wholly distinguished him as a person worthy of our recognition; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby honors and commends Dr. Ioannis Miaoulis on becoming the 11th

President of Roger Williams University; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dr. Ioannis Miaoulis.
