A N   A C T

RELATING TO EDUCATION -- SCHOOL FUNDS AND PROPERTY

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Jacquard, and Millea

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 16-9 of the General Laws entitled "School Funds and Property" is

hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

     16-9-11. Temperature control of school facilities.

     (a) Every school district shall ensure that the schools in their respective districts provide

5

students with a temperature controlled environment conducive to learning. Each school district

6

shall:

     (1) Maintain classroom temperatures within the target range of sixty-eight degrees (68°)

8

to seventy-six degrees (76°) Fahrenheit, and humidity control in the range of twenty to sixty

9

percent (20%-60%), in all occupied areas of school facilities.

     (b) The department of education shall promulgate rules and regulations to effectuate the

11

provisions of this section and shall be responsible for the enforcement of the provisions of this

12

section.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

EXPLANATION

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

     This act would require school districts to maintain classroom temperatures and humidity

levels within targeted levels in order to provide students with a temperature controlled

3

environment conducive to learning.

     This act would take effect upon passage.
