WHEREAS, Starting in 2015, and once again in 2017, the city of Newport, partnered

2

with Bike Newport to develop a campaign that would improve the safety of people walking,

3

biking, running, skateboarding and doing other pedestrian activities on busy streets. This highly

4

effective campaign simply asks that everyone using our busy streets, drivers and pedestrians, take

5

the time to stop, look and "do the wave" whenever they cross paths. This initial campaign

6

featured many print ads, digital posters, and numerous recognizable Rhode Islanders supporting

7

the campaign; and

8

WHEREAS, The RI Waves campaign is benefitting from the support of partners like the

9

Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, AAA Northeast, the Blackstone Valley Visitors Center in

10

Pawtucket, and the enthusiastic assistance provided by WJAR's Mario Hilario, Jim Nellis of

11

Rhode Island Food Fights, Barnaby Evans of Waterfire Providence, and Ten31 Productions; now,

12

therefore be it

13

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

14

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Bike Newport and the Rhode Island Waves for their

15

successful campaign to make our streets safer through their campaign to urge pedestrians,

16

cyclists, and drivers to stop, look, wave and wait for a return wave whenever they cross paths.

17

Thanks to the efforts of so many devoted volunteers and public servants, many lives will be saved

18

in the future through the reduction of these horrific road traffic tragedies; and be it further

1

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Honorable Jamie Bova, Mayor of Newport,
