EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF DONALD J. LOPES, SR.

     WHEREAS, Donald J. "Danny" Lopes, Sr., passed away on April 8, 2019. He was the

2

beloved husband of Marilyn Lopes; and

3

     WHEREAS, Mr. Lopes was born in Providence, a son of the late Joao and Ina Lopes. He

4

was a United States Army Veteran who had served our nation with honor and distinction, and was

5

a hard-working family man who was employed for many years as a supervisor for the Rhode

6

Island Public Transit Authority. Mr. Lopes was also the President of the Two Man Union at the

7

148 Bar & Lounge; and

8

     WHEREAS, Mr. Lopes was a dedicated and distinguished public servant who had served

9

with integrity as a member of the Providence City Council, representing the 3rd Ward. He was

10

also a delegate to the Rhode Island Constitutional Convention, and a board member of the

11

Providence Civic Center. In addition, Mr. Lopes had formerly been President of the Rhode Island

12

Seniors Association, was the founding President of S.W.A.P., and a former coach of the

13

Woodlawn Cowboys and the Easton, Massachusetts Wildcats; and

14

     WHEREAS, In addition to his wife, Marilyn, Mr. Lopes leaves behind his four children,

15

Lynette Lopes-Mitchell and her husband, Marcus, Chris Lopes and his wife, Maria, Donald

16

Lopes, Jr., and his wife, Lavonne, and Marissa Lopes. He is also survived by his twelve

17

grandchildren, Ronald Machado, Chris Lopes, Daniel Lopes, Mason Lopes, Madison Lopes,

18

Lalah Nkomo, Logan Lopes, Morgan Beltre, Zeus Beltre, Marcus Mitchell, Michael Mitchell and

19

Nichole Townsend, and one great-grandchild, Giselle Machado. He also leaves behind three

20

sisters, Virginia Lopes, Lorraine Adams and Mary Pena, and two nieces, Misty Delgado and her

daughter Mahogany Braxton, and Alisha Rose and her sons, Jermaine and Andrey Rose; and

2

     WHEREAS, Mr. Lopes was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He will be sorely

3

missed by his family and loved ones, but his legacy of exemplary public and community service

4

will long endure; now, therefore be it

5

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

6

Providence Plantations hereby expresses its condolences on the passing of Donald J. Lopes; and

7

be it further

8

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

9

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Mrs. Marilyn Lopes, Lynette Lopes-Mitchell,

10

Chris Lopes, Donald Lopes, Jr., and Marissa Lopes.
