CELEBRATING "TREE WEEK" ON MAY 5TH THROUGH MAY 11TH IN THE STATE OF

RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, In 1907, then President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed, "A people without

2

children would face a hopeless future; a country without trees is almost as hopeless"; and

3

     WHEREAS, The celebration of "Tree Week" is to raise awareness and educate residents

4

on the economic and environmental importance and impact of trees in our State and Worldwide;

5

and

6

     WHEREAS, Trees reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, lower

7

our heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, help manage storm water, and provide

8

habitat for wildlife; and

9

     WHEREAS, Trees help fight climate change. Through the natural process of

10

photosynthesis, trees absorb CO2 and other pollutant particulates, then store the carbon and emit

11

pure oxygen; and

12

     WHEREAS, Trees in our towns and cities increase property values, enhance the

13

economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our communities; and

14

     WHEREAS, Trees are a renewable resource for providing paper, wood for our homes,

15

fuel for our fires, and countless other wood products; and

16

     WHEREAS, Trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal;

17

now, therefore be it

18

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

19

Providence Plantations hereby commemorates "Tree Week" on May 5th through May 11th of

2019; and be it further

2

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

3

Providence Plantations hereby affirms the environmental benefits and important role trees play in

4

our environment and urges all Rhode Islanders to support efforts to protect our trees and

5

woodlands; and be it further

6

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

7

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Honorable Gina Raimondo, Governor of the

8

State of Rhode Island, Janet L. Coit, Director of Rhode Island Department of Environmental

9

Management, and the RI Tree Council.
