H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF THE HONORABLE

LORRAINE LOUISE KANE

     WHEREAS, It is with utmost sadness that this House has learned of the passing of the

Honorable Lorraine Louise Kane, beloved wife of Stephen Patrick Kane for fifty-four years, and

the devoted mother of Colin Patrick, the former Chair of the I-195 Commission, and his wife,

Karen, Brendan Conor and his wife, Brooke, and Michaela Brockmann and her husband, Peter,

and her "adopted children" Jared and Erin Earley. She was also the cherished grandmother of

eight grandchildren: John Patrick, Hopie, Hannah, Dylan Conor, Charlotte, Lily, Claire, and Joey;

and

     WHEREAS, Born in Providence, Mrs. Kane, affectionately known as "Rain" by her

family and many friends, was the daughter of the late Peter and Agnes Mellon, and the sister of

the late Marilyn Haxton and Francis "Pete" Mellon. She was a graduate of Classical High School

and had attended Annhurst College in Connecticut; and

     WHEREAS, After modeling for a number of years, Mrs. Kane became a stewardess for

American Airlines based in New York City. She resigned from the airlines in 1965, when she fell

in love with and married Stephen Patrick Kane; and

     WHEREAS, Elected on November 2, 1976, the Honorable Lorraine Kane had served in

the Rhode Island House of Representatives for five terms, having never lost an election. She

represented a portion of the City of Warwick, and had served her first two terms as a Republican,

and her last three as a Democrat; and

     WHEREAS, Over the years, Mrs. Kane had also worked as a banquet sales manager at

Quidnessett Country Club for over thirty-five years, as a Pre-Cana instructor and a marriage

officiant, and one of her proudest accomplishments was her service as an Extraordinary Minister

of the Eucharist to the Sick for sixteen years; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Kane was also very involved and donated many hours to numerous

civic organizations. She had served as the Chair of the RI Cancer Society-special gifts committee,

as an Executive Board member of the Girl Scouts of America, and as the Warwick Chairperson of

the RI Heart Association, to name but a few. For her many years of service, Mrs. Kane was

recognized with myriad awards and was particularly honored to receive the Rhode Island

Hospitality Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Kane was blessed with a large and loving family, many good friends,

and at the end of her life, with the kind and compassionate care provided by the teams at Kent

Hospital, Rhode Island Hospital, and St. Elizabeth's Home, and especially by Dr. Veena Iyer and

Megan Comella; and

     WHEREAS, Lorraine Kane touched the lives of so many people through her good deeds

and her life's endeavors and she will be dearly missed; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby extends its deepest condolences on the passing of the Honorable

Lorraine Louise Kane; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Stephen Patrick Kane and Family.
