J O I N T   R E S O L U T I O N

ADOPTION OF THE STATE PLAN ON ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND RELATED

DISORDERS

     WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a fatal, degenerative disease of the brain that impairs

2

cognitive function, memory, and behavior; and

3

     WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is not part of the normal aging process; and

4

     WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States

5

and the fifth leading cause of death for those over 65 years of age; and

6

     WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the only leading cause of death that cannot be

7

prevented, cured, or even slowed; and

8

     WHEREAS, An estimated 5.7 million people nationwide have Alzheimer's disease,

9

including 200,000 individuals under the age of 65; and

10

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island is projected to have 27,000 individuals with Alzheimer's

11

disease by 2025; and

12

     WHEREAS, This General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island and Providence

13

Plantations hereby affirmed the need for a state plan for Alzheimer's disease and related disorders

14

and directed the Long-Term Care Coordinating Council to convene an Alzheimer's disease and

15

related disorders working group (hereafter "working group"), by Joint Resolution during the

16

January Session, A.D. 2012; and

17

     WHEREAS, The working group transmitted to the Governor and to the General

18

Assembly a state plan for Alzheimer's disease and related disorders in 2013; and

19

     WHEREAS, The working group has commissioned a five year update regarding the

important developments in the area of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders; now therefore be

2

it

3

     RESOLVED, That this General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island and Providence

4

Plantations hereby recognizes that people with Alzheimer's disease or a related disorders and their

5

families must have all of the information and support they need and services delivered as

6

effectively and efficiently as possible; and be it further

7

     RESOLVED, That this General Assembly hereby supports the adoption and

8

implementation of the five year update to the state plan for Alzheimer's disease and related

9

disorders in the State of Rhode Island as developed by the working group; and be it further

10

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

11

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Gina Raimondo, Governor of the

12

State of Rhode Island.
