CONGRATULATING AND HONORING OLIVIA BARBOZA AND CONNOR ENESTVEDT, | |
FOR BEING NAMED DISTINGUISHED FINALISTS FOR THE 2019 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT | |
OF COMMUNITY AWARDS | |

1 | WHEREAS, The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program honors high school |
2 | and middle school students across the United States for their volunteer service. The program |
3 | began in 1995 as a partnership between Prudential Financial and the National Association of |
4 | Secondary School Principals. In 2018, more than 29,000 students throughout America |
5 | participated in this program; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Olivia Barboza, aged 17 and a senior at Cumberland High School, recruited |
7 | volunteers to assist her in creating and sending 62 menstrual hygiene care kits to female students |
8 | attending school in rural Ghana, a nation located on the west coast of Africa. Olivia also raised |
9 | additional funds to provide for a health care educator to teach the Ghana students about menstrual |
10 | health, and hopes that providing this assistance will empower the female students to remain in |
11 | school and complete their education; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Connor Enestvedt, aged 14 and a freshman at Cumberland High School, |
13 | devoted hundreds of volunteer hours planting, tending to, and harvesting crops in support of the |
14 | Historic Metcalf Franklin Farm, a farm owned by the Town of Cumberland that provides organic |
15 | vegetables for those in need of food assistance. Connor also educates the wider community about |
16 | the farm, which donates 40,000 pounds of food annually; now, therefore be it |
17 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
18 | hereby congratulates and honors Olivia Barboza and Connor Enestvedt for being named |
19 | Distinguished Finalists for the 2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards; and be it further |

2 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Ms. Olivia Barboza and Mr. Connor Enestvedt. |
