RELATING TO STATE AFFAIRS AND GOVERNMENT - DEPARTMENT OF ATTORNEY

GENERAL

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Section 42-9-19 of the General Laws in Chapter 42-9 entitled "Department

of Attorney General" is hereby amended to read as follows:

     42-9-19. Acceptance of settlements -- Attorney General settlement restricted

4

account.

     The attorney general is hereby authorized and empowered to accept in the name of the

6

state any settlement resulting from a multi-state initiative. Such settlement proceeds shall be

7

transferred to the general treasurer for deposit in the general fund. The general treasurer shall

8

transfer ten percent (10%) twenty-five percent (25%) of such proceeds, up to sixty-five thousand

9

dollars ($65,000) in any fiscal year, to the "attorney general multi-state initiative account." The

10

restricted account shall be used solely to pay for any fees or membership dues associated with

11

multi-state initiatives.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

     This act would increase the percentage from ten percent (10%) to twenty-five percent

(25%) of the amount that the attorney general would receive from multi-state initiative

3

settlements and eliminate the cap of sixty-five thousand dollars ($65,000) and restrictions on

4

spending.

5

     This act would take effect upon passage.
