S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

EXPRESSING SINCERE CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF JANET R. MCGOVERN

     WHEREAS, It is with deep sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of Janet R.

2

McGovern, the beloved wife of Stephen K. McGovern, Sr., for forty wonderful years, and the

3

cherished mother of Stephen McGovern, Jr. and his wife, Kristen, and Meghan Hall and her

4

husband, Derek; and

5

     WHEREAS, Mrs. McGovern was a daughter of the late Joseph and Helen Colan, and the

6

loving sister of Carolyn Wheeler, and the late Joseph, Gary, and Robert Colan. She grew up in the

7

City of Providence and was a graduate of Hope High School; and

8

     WHEREAS, With a loving personality, Mrs. McGovern created and nurtured a marriage

9

that flourished, and a home that was warm and welcoming. She doted on her family, particularly

10

her grandchildren Colin and Brendan McGovern, who were the light of her life; and

11

     WHEREAS, In addition to making a wonderful home for her family, Mrs. McGovern

12

was a clerk with the Providence and Kent County District Courts for nearly twenty years, until

13

her retirement in December of 2018. She excelled at cooking delicious meals, was a discerning

14

shopper, played the lottery religiously, and enjoyed dinner with her girlfriends and the beach; and

15

     WHEREAS, Mrs. McGovern had been diagnosed with cancer more than a decade ago.

16

For some people, that diagnosis may well have limited their joy for life, but not so for Janet. With

17

courage and the optimism of a pure heart, she fought her cancer the same way she lived her life,

18

with strong faith and commitment; and

19

     WHEREAS, There is no doubt that Janet McGovern, a loving wife, mother, grandmother,

20

and friend to many, left an indelible mark on the lives of those she knew and loved, and she will

be dearly missed; now, therefore be it

2

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

3

hereby expresses our deepest sympathies to the McGovern Family on the passing of Janet R.

4

McGovern; and be it further

5

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

6

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Stephen K. McGovern, Sr., and Family.
