EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF BERNARD A.

HARWOOD

     WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of Bernard

2

A. Harwood, a well-respected longtime resident of the City of Pawtucket, the devoted husband of

3

the late Helen Harwood, and the cherished father of Helen Matteson, our friend and former

4

Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Honorable John Harwood and his wife, Patti, and

5

Bernard Harwood and his wife, Pauline; and

6

     WHEREAS, Born in the City of Providence, Mr. Harwood was a son of the late Louis

7

and Rose Harwood, and the brother of the late William Harwood, Kathleen Burns, George

8

Harwood, Thomas Harwood, and John Harwood; and

9

     WHEREAS, An incredibly hard-working man, who worked tirelessly to provide for his

10

family, Mr. Harwood was employed as a foreman for the Gilbane Corporation and was a member

11

of the Local 271 Laborer’s International for fifty years until his retirement. He had also worked as

12

a bus driver, where he had the honor of driving the last trolley car in Providence; and

13

     WHEREAS, Mr. Harwood was a dedicated family man who instilled a deep work ethic in

14

all his children and unfailingly cheered and supported their successes. As the family's patriarch,

15

he was tremendously proud of his grandchildren, Helen Fleury and her husband, Mark, Megan

16

Decker and her husband, Seth, John Patrick Harwood, Kylie Huxley and her husband,

17

Christopher, Lindsay Harwood, Olivia Harwood, Bernard Harwood, and Joshua Harwood, and

18

his great-grandchildren, Mark, Robert, Matthew, John, Grayson, Reid, Nikayla and Nevaeh; and

19

     WHEREAS, Bernie Harwood was a beloved fixture in the community. Reaching the age

of 100, he had lived a long and blessed life. His passing is a sorrowful loss for his loving family

2

and his many friends, but his legacy of devotion to his family and community will live on and

3

long endure in the hearts of all who knew him; now, therefore be it

4

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

5

hereby expresses its deepest condolences to the Harwood Family on the passing of Bernard A.

6

Harwood; and be it further

7

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

8

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Helen Matteson, the Honorable John B.

9

Harwood, and Bernard Harwood.
