RELATING TO HIGHWAYS -- SIDEWALKS ALONG STATE HIGHWAYS

     

     Introduced By: Senators Pearson, Gallo, Picard, Lombardo, and Quezada

     Referred To: Senate Housing & Municipal Government

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Section 24-7-8 of the General Laws in Chapter 24-7 entitled "Sidewalks" is

hereby amended to read as follows:

     24-7-8. Sidewalks along state highways.

     (a) Nothing in this chapter shall be held to oust the state of jurisdiction over any such

5

sidewalks and curbing as may be made, laid, or constructed upon state highways within a town,

6

but no sidewalks or curbing on state highways shall be made, laid, or constructed without the

7

approval of the director of transportation first being had and obtained as to the feasibility,

8

location, type, and time of construction.

     (b) On all school bus stops along routes approved by the school committees and chiefs of

10

police for the various cities and towns, the department of transportation shall have the

11

responsibility for clearing the designated sidewalk areas along state highways of snow and ice.

12

     (c) The school departments for the various cities and towns must submit the approved bus

13

stop routes to the department of transportation by October 1 of each year to allow the department

14

to plan accordingly.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

EXPLANATION

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

     This act would require the department of transportation to clear sidewalks of snow and

ice on state roads for school bus stops along routes approved by the respective school committees

3

and chief of police for each city and town.

4

     This act would take effect upon passage.
