S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING MAY 5TH THROUGH MAY 11TH, 2019, TO BE "MELANOMA

AWARENESS WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     

     Introduced By: Senators Goodwin, McCaffrey, Miller, Satchell, and Algiere

     WHEREAS, Skin cancer is a serious problem for people who spend significant time

2

outdoors in the sun; and

3

     WHEREAS, Melanoma is the most deadly common form of skin cancer; and

4

     WHEREAS, Melanoma rates among Rhode Islanders have been steadily rising in Rhode

5

Island since 1995, with diagnoses increasing by an average rate of 1.5 percent each year; and

6

     WHEREAS, Advocacy, increased awareness, promoting ultraviolet light protection, and

7

skin cancer screening will result in a meaningful reduction in the burden of skin cancer; and

8

     WHEREAS, Members of The Partnership to Reduce Cancer in Rhode Island, physicians

9

at Brown Dermatology, the Rhode Island Department of Health's Comprehensive Cancer Control

10

Program, and Lifespan Community Health Institute are diligently working cooperatively to

11

accomplish statewide Skin Cancer Prevention and Control strategic objectives; now, therefore be

12

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

14

hereby proclaims May 5th through May 11th, 2019, to be "Melanoma Awareness Week" in the

15

State of Rhode Island, and encourages all residents to learn more about the prevention and early

16

detection of skin cancer; and be it further

17

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

18

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to The Partnership to Reduce Cancer in Rhode

19

Island, Brown Dermatology, the Rhode Island Department of Health's Comprehensive Cancer
