EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF DONALD J. LOPES, SR. | |

1 | WHEREAS, Donald J. "Danny" Lopes, Sr., passed away on April 8, 2019. He was the |
2 | beloved husband of Marilyn Lopes; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Mr. Lopes was born in Providence, a son of the late Joao and Ina Lopes. He |
4 | was a 1978 graduate of Johnson and Wales University and also a United States Army Veteran |
5 | who served our nation with honor and distinction. Mr. Lopes was a hard-working man who was |
6 | employed for many years as a supervisor for the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, where he |
7 | was a member of the notorious group of minority drivers at RIPTA known as the "Sophisticated |
8 | Gents". He was also the President of the Two Man Union at the 148 Bar & Lounge; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Mr. Lopes was a dedicated and distinguished public servant who had served |
10 | with integrity as a member of the Providence City Council, representing the 3rd Ward. He was |
11 | also a delegate to the Rhode Island Constitutional Convention, and a board member of the |
12 | Providence Civic Center. In addition, Mr. Lopes had formerly been President of the Rhode Island |
13 | Seniors Association, was the founding President of S.W.A.P., and a former coach of the |
14 | Woodlawn Cowboys and the Easton, Massachusetts Wildcats; and |
15 | WHEREAS, In addition to his wife, Marilyn, Mr. Lopes leaves behind his four children, |
16 | Lynette Lopes-Mitchell and her husband, Marcus, Chris Lopes and his wife, Maria, Donald |
17 | Lopes, Jr., and his wife, Lavonne, and Marissa Lopes. He is also survived by his twelve |
18 | grandchildren, Ronald Machado, Chris Lopes, Daniel Lopes, Mason Lopes, Madison Lopes, |
19 | Lalah Nkomo, Logan Lopes, Morgan Beltre, Zeus Beltre, Marcus Mitchell, Michael Mitchell and |
20 | Nichole Townsend, and one great-grandchild, Giselle Machado. He also leaves behind three |

1 | sisters, Virginia Lopes, Lorraine Adams and Mary Pena, and two nieces, Misty Delgado and her |
2 | daughter Mahogany Braxton, and Alisha Rose and her sons, Jermaine and Andrey Rose; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Mr. Lopes was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He will be sorely |
4 | missed by his family and loved ones, but his legacy of exemplary public and community service |
5 | will long endure; now, therefore be it |
6 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
7 | hereby expresses its condolences on the passing of Donald J. Lopes; and be it further |
8 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
9 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Mrs. Marilyn Lopes, Lynette Lopes-Mitchell, |
10 | Chris Lopes, Donald Lopes, Jr., and Marissa Lopes. |
