IN RECOGNITION OF THE NATIONAL HOUSING WEEK OF ACTION FROM MAY 30 TO | |

1 | WHEREAS, Safe, decent, accessible homes that people can afford are a foundational |
2 | component of any community's vitality and growth; and |
3 | WHEREAS, There are 49,430 extremely low-income renter households in Rhode Island |
4 | whose annual income is $25,180 or less for a family of four; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Fifty-four percent of extremely low-income renter households in Rhode |
6 | Island pay more than half of their incomes for rent; and |
7 | WHEREAS, There is a shortage of 22,806 homes that are affordable and available for |
8 | extremely low-income renter households in Rhode Island; and |
9 | WHEREAS, This shortage of homes that are affordable and available for extremely low- |
10 | income renter households is the cause of homelessness in Rhode Island and the United States; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Investing in affordable housing produces long-term benefits, from increased |
12 | employment and economic mobility to improved health and better education; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Advocates are participating in today's rally "Our Homes, Our Voices: Rally |
14 | for Fair & Affordable Housing" as part of the National Housing Week of Action from May 30 to |
15 | June 5, 2019, and are respectfully requesting measures to protect Rhode Islanders from housing |
16 | discrimination, reduce legal barriers for renters, and increased investments in affordable housing; |
17 | now, therefore be it |
18 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
19 | hereby endorses the "Our Homes, Our Voices National Housing Week of Action" from May 30 to |

1 | June 5, 2019, and supports expanding access to affordable homes in Rhode Island and working |
2 | together to ensure that every Rhode Islander has a safe, decent, affordable home; and be it further |
3 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
4 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Honorable Donald J. Trump, President of |
5 | the United States, the Honorable Gina M. Raimondo, Governor of the State of Rhode Island, and |
6 | the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation. |
