It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
1 | SECTION 1. Section 16-98-7 of the General Laws in Chapter 16-98 entitled "Access to |
2 | Advanced Placement Courses for All Students Act [See Title 16 Chapter 97 - The Rhode Island |
3 | Board of Education Act]" is hereby amended to read as follows: |
4 | 16-98-7. Availability of advanced placement courses. |
5 | (a) Any school district offering advanced placement courses to students shall notify |
6 | parents of their availability and the guidelines the school district uses in determining which |
7 | students may be eligible to enroll in an advanced placement course. |
8 | (b) Any school district offering advanced placement courses to students shall publish on |
9 | the school district's website the names of the advanced placement courses being offered to |
10 | students and the guidelines the school district uses in determining which students may be eligible |
11 | to enroll in an advanced placement course. |
12 | (c) All school districts shall permit an advanced placement course in computer science to |
13 | satisfy a course requirement in mathematics provided that: |
14 | (1) The student has successfully completed algebra I, and algebra II; and |
15 | (2) The advanced placement course is the College Board's advanced placement computer |
16 | science principles, computer science A, or the equivalent. |
17 | SECTION 2. Chapter 16-22 of the General Laws entitled "Curriculum [See Title 16 |
18 | Chapter 97 - The Rhode Island Board of Education Act]" is hereby amended by adding thereto |

1 | the following section: |
2 | 16-22-30. Computer science graduation requirement. |
3 | Commencing with the graduating class of 2021 and continuing thereafter, all high school |
4 | students attending public schools, or any other schools managed and controlled by the state, shall |
5 | demonstrate proficiency, as defined by the local educational agency, in one course in computer |
6 | science education. |
7 | SECTION 3. This act shall take effect upon passage. |

1 | This act would require all high school students graduating in 2021 and thereafter, |
2 | attending public or any schools managed and controlled by the state, to demonstrate proficiency |
3 | in one course in computer science education. It would also require local school districts to allow |
4 | certain advanced placement courses in computer science to satisfy a high school mathematics |
5 | requirement. |
6 | This act would take effect upon passage. |
