CONGRATULATING AND THANKING THE BURRILLVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT | |
FOR ITS EFFORTS TO PROMOTE SCHOOL SAFETY | |

1 | WHEREAS, In these challenging times, school safety has become of paramount |
2 | importance to students and their parents as well as for school staff and local police departments; |
3 | and |
4 | WHEREAS, The Burrillville Police Department has developed and implemented clear |
5 | school policies and protocols that will enable the five public schools in Burrillville to be prepared |
6 | in the event of any threat of violence at the schools; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Lockdown Drills are conducted twice a year at each school, with officers, |
8 | school staff, and administration responding in concert, and security posts have been established in |
9 | each school with a daily walk through conducted by trained officers and held at the beginning and |
10 | end of each school day, in conjunction with and supplementing the School's Resource Officer; |
11 | and |
12 | WHEREAS, The Burrillville Police Department has also established an Active Shooter |
13 | Team, which meets with school SRO officers, local Fire District representatives, and school |
14 | department personnel once a month, and are equipped to be deployed to any school quickly; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Any and all threats at Burrillville's Schools are taken seriously and |
16 | thoroughly vetted, and the Police Department has provided additional training for officers in the |
17 | best practices to address all aspects of school safety; and |
18 | WHEREAS, In addition, all members of the Police Department are issued key cards that |
19 | allow them immediate access into the schools during an emergency or critical incident, with |

1 | Supervisors having master keys, which allow them to open doors once inside the school; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Keeping our children safe to learn and grow in an environment free from |
3 | harm or threat is essential in providing for their successful education and affording them with the |
4 | potential for a bright and prosperous future; now, therefore be it |
5 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
6 | hereby congratulates and thanks the Burrillville Police Department for its efforts to promote |
7 | school safety; and be it further |
8 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
9 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Colonel Stephen J. Lynch, Burrillville Chief of |
10 | Police. |
