CONGRATULATING JOSE ALEMÁN ON HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE PROVIDENCE | |
SCHOOL DEPARTMENT AFTER THIRTY-FIVE YEARS OF DISTINGUISHED AND | |
EXEMPLARY SERVICE AS AN EDUCATOR | |

1 | WHEREAS, Jose Alemán was born in Santiago, Dominican Republic, and moved to |
2 | New York City as a young child, where he graduated from high school. From an early age, Mr. |
3 | Alemán had an interest in educational issues and saw the attainment of a quality education as a |
4 | vital entry point for those striving to succeed in America. He attended Earlham College in |
5 | Indiana, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education, and subsequently moved |
6 | to Rhode Island and received a Master's degree in Education from Rhode Island College. He later |
7 | attended Harvard University's Graduate School of Education, where he completed a Certificate of |
8 | Advanced Graduate Study in Education Administration; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Mr. Alemán has a long and distinguished career of excellence in the field of |
10 | education, serving in an array of administrative positions with various administrations including |
11 | the Community College of Rhode Island, the University of Central Florida, where he was the |
12 | editor of the school's multicultural newspaper, and the Providence School District, where he |
13 | served with distinction since 1994 as a Director, Administrator and Principal; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Mr. Alemán is an expert in multicultural education and has worked |
15 | tirelessly and cooperatively through the years with all educational stakeholders to better promote |
16 | and support trans-cultural teaching and learning environments. Thanks to his hard work and |
17 | diligence, many generations of students have been mentored and became new educators; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Mr. Alemán also has a long track record of civic engagement within the |
19 | wider Rhode Island community. In the late 1990s, he was the publisher and co-owner of El |

1 | Nuevo Siglo, a Spanish-Language weekly, and published numerous articles and opinion pieces in |
2 | several Rhode Island Newspapers. More recently, he authored the book "New Perspectives in |
3 | Education for Effective Instructional Practices"; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Mr. Alemán and his wife, Dancys, are the parents of four children and the |
5 | grandparents of four grandchildren. He has been a resident of Providence's Elmhurst |
6 | neighborhood for more than two decades, where he served as a Little League coach, and as a |
7 | former Board Member of the Urban League of Rhode Island, Volunteers in Providence Schools, |
8 | and the Hispanic American Coalition Service Agency. He is also a long-time Executive Board |
9 | Member of the Rhode Island Chapter of the Partido Revolucionario Moderno; now, therefore be |
10 | it |
11 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
12 | hereby congratulates Mr. Jose Alemán on his retirement from the Providence School Department |
13 | after thirty-five years of distinguished and exemplary service as an educator; and be it further |
14 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
15 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Jose Alemán. |
