CONGRATULATING PROVIDENCE POLICE OFFICER EARL LOPEZ ON HIS | |
RETIREMENT AFTER MORE THAN THIRTY-TWO YEARS OF MERITORIOUS SERVICE | |

1 | WHEREAS, Police Officers in the State of Rhode Island and across America work |
2 | diligently and courageously to serve, protect and preserve the peace in their communities |
3 | regardless of the perils or hazards they potentially face every day. Thanks to officers like Earl |
4 | Lopez of the Providence Police Department, Rhode Island and Providence citizens have had safer |
5 | and more secure lives; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Earl Lopez joined the Providence Police Department on March 1, 1987, and |
7 | until his retirement on January 7, 2020, he served the public with honor, integrity and valor. He |
8 | was well-respected by his colleagues for his devotion to duty and his deeply abiding concern for |
9 | the people he was sworn to serve and protect; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Officer Lopez received numerous awards and commendations in recognition |
11 | of his exemplary service. He was honored with the Rhea Archambault Award for his excellent |
12 | police work when he arrested a homicide suspect in Providence and was awarded the prestigious |
13 | Chief’s Award twice, the first time on August 16, 1990, when he arrested a murder suspect who |
14 | was armed with a shotgun. He received the award for the second time on May 23, 1991, when he |
15 | dove into the Providence River to save two people who were drowning; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Officer Lopez leaves a legacy of devotion to duty and selfless sacrifice that |
17 | all public service workers seek to emulate, and he is eminently worthy of our praise and |
18 | acknowledgement. He will be sorely missed by his fellow police officers and the citizens of |
19 | Providence, whom he served so well; now, therefore be it |

1 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
2 | Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Providence Police Officer Earl Lopez on his |
3 | retirement after more than thirty-two years of devoted and distinguished service to the citizens of |
4 | Providence and we wish him continued success in all his future endeavors; and be it further |
5 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
6 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Officer Earl Lopez. |
