MAN OF THE YEAR FOR 2019 | |

1 | WHEREAS, Stephen Salloway, MD, is the Martin M. Zucker Professor of Psychiatry and |
2 | Human Behavior and Professor of Neurology at Brown University, Chief of Neurology and |
3 | Director of the Memory and Aging Program (MAP) at Butler Hospital, and a global leader in |
4 | Alzheimer’s Research; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Approximately 5.5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's disease and |
6 | it is estimated that around 5.3 million are 65 and older, and about two-thirds are women; and |
7 | WHEREAS, For more than two decades, Dr. Salloway has played a pivotal role in the |
8 | worldwide fight against Alzheimer’s disease; and |
9 | WHEREAS, During his tenure as the Director of MAP, numerous important outcomes |
10 | and advances in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease have advanced, including most recently, |
11 | trials for an investigative drug called Aducanumab which is on an FDA fasttrack to becoming the |
12 | first new drug approved in 16 years, that actually targets the disease and could potentially become |
13 | "One of the Most Valuable in History" in the fight against Alzheimer's; and |
14 | WHEREAS, MAP is an affiliate of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown |
15 | University and has a 25-year history of excellence in clinical care, training, and research. They |
16 | work hand-in-hand with community groups, health care providers, and research organizations to |
17 | find preventative and breakthrough treatments for Alzheimer’s disease; and |
18 | WHEREAS, For his momentous achievements in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, |
19 | Dr. Salloway has been named Rhode Island’s Man of the Year for 2019 by GoLocalProv on |

1 | January 1, 2020, and was inducted into Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame on May 8, 2019; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Due to the extraordinary work of Dr. Salloway, MAP, and the many |
3 | participants and donors, effective treatment and prevention of Alzheimer's is closer to becoming a |
4 | reality; now, therefore be it |
5 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
6 | Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Dr. Stephen Salloway on being named Rhode |
7 | Island's Man of the Year for 2019, and wishes him much continued success; and be it further |
8 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
9 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dr. Stephen Salloway. |
