EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF PAUL J. SHANLEY | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this House has learned of the passing of Paul J. |
2 | Shanley, the devoted husband of twenty-nine years to his best friend, Patti, and the beloved father |
3 | of our friend and colleague, the Honorable Evan Shanley and his wife, Meredith, Christopher |
4 | Lawrence, Sean Lawrence, Meaghan Shanley, and the late Tyler Shanley, who died in infancy. |
5 | He was also the very proud and cherished “Dah Pa” of Maxwell Tyler; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Paul Shanley was the son of the late Joseph and Elaine Shanley, the brother |
7 | of his fraternal twin, Rev. Brian Shanley, O.P., Andrew Shanley and his wife, Karen, Michael |
8 | Shanley and his partner, Lisa Tingue, his favorite sister, Kathryn and her husband, Jimmy, and |
9 | the big-hearted uncle of many nieces and nephews; and |
10 | WHEREAS, A graduate of Roger Williams University, where he earned his Bachelor's |
11 | degree in criminal justice, and a Master of Public Administration, Mr. Shanley had spent most of |
12 | his career in law enforcement, retiring as a Captain in the Warwick Police Department after |
13 | twenty-six years of service to his community. During his tenure with the Department, he had |
14 | completed myriad additional training opportunities and certifications, including a dignitary |
15 | protection training session with the United States Secret Service, and had been awarded the First |
16 | Class Medal and Ribbon for professionalism; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Upon his retirement from the Warwick Police Department, Mr. Shanley |
18 | became the Deputy Chief of Police at Brown University’s Department of Public Safety, a position |
19 | he held until his passing; and |
20 | WHEREAS, In his leisure time, Mr. Shanley was an avid golfer and long-time member |

1 | of Potowomut Golf Club. He had also been a practitioner of Jiu Jitsu for many years and had |
2 | attained the rank of Godan (fifth-degree black belt) from the Kyudan Federation, and was an |
3 | active member of St. Gregory the Great parish in Warwick, serving as a Eucharistic Minister, |
4 | President of the Parish Council, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and a baseball and |
5 | softball coach; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Mr. Shanley had fought a courageous eight-month battle against a rare form |
7 | of bone cancer with the loving care of his brother Michael and brother-in-law William Monahan, |
8 | and with the extraordinary medical care of the sarcoma team at Mass General Hospital. His |
9 | humor and joy for life will always be remembered and dearly missed by those who had the good |
10 | fortune to have shared his life; now, therefore be it |
11 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
12 | Providence Plantations hereby extends deepest condolences on the passing of Paul J. Shanley; |
13 | and be it further |
14 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
15 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Patti Shanley and Family, Mr. Michael |
16 | Shanley, the Honorable Evan Shanley, Christopher Lawrence, Sean Lawrence, Meaghan Shanley, |
17 | and Mr. William Monahan. |
