STATE OF RHODE ISLAND | |
IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY | |
JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2020
____________ | |
H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N | |
CONGRATULATING THE WOONSOCKET FOOTBALL TEAM ON WINNING THE
RHODE ISLAND 2019 DIVISION II STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
| |
Introduced By: Representatives Phillips, Casey, Morin, and Newberry
Date Introduced: January 29, 2020
Referred To: House read and passed
1 | WHEREAS, The Woonsocket Villa Novans Football Team proved that perseverance |
2 | pays off as they rebounded from a slow start to the season by never quitting and working even |
3 | harder, and this “never quit” attitude resulted in Woonsocket going on a winning streak and |
4 | stunning the high school football scene as they repeated as Division II Super Bowl Champions; |
5 | and |
6 | WHEREAS, In the Semifinals of the State Playoffs, Woonsocket met rival East |
7 | Greenwich, a team that had easily defeated them earlier in the season. The rematch would be a |
8 | different affair as Woonsocket’s stout and hard-hitting defense stopped East Greenwich’s highly |
9 | regarded offense. The game was a scoreless affair until Woonsocket Quarterback Tarik |
10 | Robinson-O’Hagan put the Villa Novans on the scoreboard with a 42-yard run for a touchdown. |
11 | East Greenwich finally broke through with a touchdown score late in the game, but instead of |
12 | kicking the extra point, they went for the win on a two-point conversion play but their screen play |
13 | was stuffed by the Villa Novan defense for a Woonsocket 7 to 6 victory and a berth in the |
14 | Championship game; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Woonsocket repeated as State Champions as they thrashed Mount Pleasant |
16 | by the score of 28-0 in the Title Game played on a windy and rainy day. Once again the ferocious |
17 | Villa Novan defense rose to the challenge and smothered the opposition offense, shutting out |
18 | Mount Pleasant by causing turnovers and havoc all game long. The Woonsocket defense caused |
19 | five turnovers, with the Villa Novans scoring on four of them. The Woonsocket tough offensive |
| |
1 | line controlled the point of attack, allowing running back Logan Coles to rush for 108 yards, |
2 | while quarterback Tarik Robinson-O’Hagan tossed a key touchdown to receiver Eric Agyemang. |
3 | A team that overcame adversity all season finished with a flourish, as they repeated as Division II |
4 | Rhode Island State Super Bowl Champions; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Winning a State Championship requires that every member of the team give |
6 | their all and put personal interests aside in favor of team needs. The Woonsocket Football Team |
7 | had those virtues in abundance thanks to the tireless efforts put forth all season by Logan Coles, |
8 | Tarik Robinson-O’Hagan Corey Brown, Jaiden Milatmouk, Clinton Kittavong, Xavier Alvarez, |
9 | Dylan Macintyre, Ethan Allaire, Eric Agyemang, Christian Rosario, Raymond Ham, David |
10 | Moya, Isaiah Ellie, Angel Benzant, Timothy Wolter, Jr., Leonardo Garcia, Anfernee Abney, |
11 | Jayson Inthasane, Terrell Durden, Daniel Sabourin and Elijah Toure. The Woonsocket Football |
12 | Team also benefitted all season by the outstanding leadership and sterling coaching that was |
13 | provided by Head Coach Charles Bibeault; now, therefore be it |
14 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
15 | Providence Plantations hereby congratulates the Woonsocket Football Team on winning the |
16 | Rhode Island 2019 Division II State Football Championship and repeating as Super Bowl title |
17 | winners; and be it further |
18 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
19 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Head Coach Charles Bibeault, Woonsocket |
20 | Football. |
