EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF JANE KEMPF LANGMUIR | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with sadness that this House has learned of the passing of Jane Kempf |
2 | Langmuir, beloved wife of the late Paul Langmuir, cherished mother of Karl and his wife, |
3 | Corryn, and Christian, and proud grandmother of Hannah, Grace, and Meredith Langmuir, and |
4 | Noah, Zachary and Marlee Foster; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Langmuir grew up in South Pasadena, California, with her sisters, Julie |
6 | Skinner and Gretchen Milligan. During her teens, the family moved to Short Hills, New Jersey. |
7 | She attended the Rhode Island School of Design, where she studied interior architecture; and |
8 | WHEREAS, During her college years, Mrs. Langmuir met the love of her life and future |
9 | husband, Paul. Together they raised their family and later enjoyed summering in Martha's |
10 | Vineyard and traveling together, particularly to Scotland; and |
11 | WHEREAS, In addition to making a warm and welcoming home for her family and |
12 | friends, Mrs. Langmuir was employed in a number of creative and artistic venues. She began at |
13 | the architectural firm Saarinen, Swansen and Associates in Hamden, Connecticut, and |
14 | subsequently resigned in order to open her own independent studio. Throughout the 70's and |
15 | 80's, the Jane K. Langmuir Inc. designed numerous homes with a special focus and interest in |
16 | kitchen design; and |
17 | WHEREAS, In the late 80's, Mrs. Langmuir took a position teaching at the Rhode Island |
18 | School of Design, where she ultimately became the head of the Interior Architecture Department, |
19 | and collaborated on a five-year, research-based project based on a "Universal Kitchen" concept |
20 | and designs that were featured in The New York Times and later debuted at a 1998 exhibition at |

1 | the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City, and also featured on The |
2 | Oprah Winfrey Show; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Langmuir was also active with her church and in the community, |
4 | serving for two terms as senior warden at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, and on the boards at The |
5 | Providence Athenaeum, the Providence Center and Swan Point Cemetery; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Jane Langmuir was lovingly described by her friends as a "bright-eyed artist |
7 | with an easy laugh" who was "forthright and full of grace, emanating genuine warmth and quiet |
8 | strength" and she will forever be remembered by those who shared her beautiful life; now, |
9 | therefore be it |
10 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
11 | Providence Plantations hereby extends deepest condolences on the passing of Jane Kempf |
12 | Langmuir; and be it further |
13 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
14 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Karl Langmuir and Family. |
