WELCOMING THE NARRAGANSETT COUNCIL, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA, TO THE | |
RHODE ISLAND HOUSE AS THEY PRESENT THEIR 2019 "REPORT TO THE STATE" | |

1 | WHEREAS, The Narragansett Council, Boy Scouts of America, was founded on |
2 | September 6th, 1910, and was chartered by the Congress of the United States in 1911. Since |
3 | 1910, the Narragansett Council has made an immense difference in the lives of countless young |
4 | people in the State of Rhode Island. The Council has helped positively shape the character of the |
5 | youth of our State, preparing them to be future leaders, to make wise ethical decisions, and |
6 | instilling within them the values of the Scout Oath and Law; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The Narragansett Council works tirelessly to be accessible to all Rhode |
8 | Islanders, regardless of their income or social status. In particular, they worked hard to include |
9 | disadvantaged families from within urban communities, with over 1,000 youth participating in |
10 | Scouting in the Narragansett Council’s Scoutreach program in 2019; and |
11 | WHEREAS, The Narragansett Council makes a positive impact in the lives of countless |
12 | people within every single community in Rhode Island. Last year, 15,615 scouts and leaders |
13 | across the Narragansett Council donated 77,646 hours of community service. In the Council’s |
14 | annual "Scouting for Food" drive over 190,000 pounds of food was collected and donated to local |
15 | food pantries; and |
16 | WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America and the Narragansett Council offer a wide array |
17 | of programming for all families and in 2019, welcomed girls into Scouting for the first time in the |
18 | Scouts BSA program. In 2019, 187 girls joined Scouts BSA in 21 all-girls troops with an |
19 | additional 621 girls signing up for Cub Scouts in 93 different packs; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Summer camps are a vital part of the scouting experience. The Narragansett |
2 | Council runs nine camps including the nationally renowned Yawgoog Scout Reservation, as well |
3 | as Camp Aquapaug, Buck Hill Scout Reservation, Camp Buxton, Cub World at Buck Hill, |
4 | Cachalot Scout Reservation, Champlin Scout Reservation, Camp Norse, and Sandsland. Last |
5 | summer, 6,066 boys and girls in Scouts BSA and 2,230 Cub Scouts and their families attended |
6 | Narragansett Council summer camps. Additionally, the Narragansett Council is investing $7.5 |
7 | million in construction at Yawgoog Scout Reservation to serve the next generation of Scouts; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Today, the Narragansett Council serves the entire State of Rhode Island |
9 | along with cities and towns in our neighboring states. The Narragansett Council has over 12,000 |
10 | youth members and nearly 3,500 volunteers in Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing, and |
11 | Explorers. The Council’s young participants and their families highly value the positive |
12 | experiences and educational enrichment opportunities the Narragansett Council provides for them |
13 | as they help to prepare their children to lead successful lives and make a positive impact in their |
14 | communities; now, therefore be it |
15 | RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and |
16 | Providence Plantations hereby welcomes the Narragansett Council, Boy Scouts of America, to the |
17 | Rhode Island House as they present their 2019 "Report to the State," and thanks them for all of |
18 | the good work they do on a daily basis in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further |
19 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
20 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Tim McCandless, Scout Executive and |
21 | CEO of the Narragansett Council, Boy Scouts of America. |
