H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

EXTENDING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF ARTHUR JOSEPH

HEWES

     WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this House has learned of the passing of Arthur

Joseph Hewes. “Artie” as he was fondly known by his family and friends, was the loving

companion of Joan Swann for 35 years; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Hewes was blessed with a large and loving family that included his

daughters, Kelley Hewes and her partner, Robin, Pamela Marchetti, Glenna Swann and son,

Adam Richard, our dear friend and colleague Kathleen Morgan and husband, Tom, Natalie

Marano and her husband, Albert, Patricia Morin and husband, Marcel, and son, Arthur Colello

and wife, Gail. He was also the very proud grandfather of twelve grandchildren and six great

grandchildren; and

     WHEREAS, Born in Rangeley, Maine, Mr. Hewes was a son of the late Arthur and Ethel

Hewes, and the brother of Carl “Red” Hewes, and the late Paul and Timothy Hewes. He was a

graduate of Providence College, where he had run track, and during the Korean War, had served

our country with honor in the United States Army; and

     WHEREAS, Artie Hewes dreamed of returning to Jamaica, golfing with his buddies, and

returning to work with his devoted Greenwood Inn family. He had loved his “girls”, reggae

music, family nights and nights playing cards, horse racing, and a Miller light on ice, and had

been a member of Kings Crossing Golf Club for more than thirty years, and a devoted fan of the

New York Yankees, New England Patriots, and Providence College Basketball; and

     WHEREAS, A vibrant and energetic octogenarian, whose “smile and laugh were

magnetic and contagious,” Artie Hewes succumbed to the cruel impact of the COVID-19

pandemic, and while there is never a fitting or easy time to lose someone you love, our

unprecedented current world circumstances make these loses even more difficult to bear. Artie

Hewes truly loved life and in return, he was adored by all who had the good fortune to be part of

his time on this earth; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby extends deepest condolences on the passing of Arthur Joseph

Hewes; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Joan Swann, Carl Hewes, Kelley Hewes,

Pamela Marchetti, Glenna Swann, Kathleen Morgan, Natalie Marano, Patricia Morin, and Arthur

Colello.
