EXTENDING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF JAMES P.

CUNNINGHAM, SR.

     WHEREAS, It is with utmost sadness that this House has learned of the passing of James

2

P. Cunningham, Sr., devoted husband of the late Mary Cunningham, and the beloved father of

3

Mary Terry McGovern and her husband, James, James Cunningham, Jr., Colleen Milazzo and her

4

husband, Edward, and the late Joanne Rapoza. He was also the very proud grandfather of eleven

5

grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; and

6

     WHEREAS, Born in the City of Providence, Mr. Cunningham was a son of the late

7

William and Winifred Cunningham. For seventy-one years, he had made his home and raised his

8

family in East Providence; and

9

     WHEREAS, Mr. Cunningham had served our country with honor in the United States

10

Army Corps, and had completed over thirty combat missions. He was a recipient of the

11

Distinguished Flying Cross, the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle

12

Eastern Campaign Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, and Four Bronze Stars; and

13

     WHEREAS, A hard-working man, Mr. Cunningham was a plumber, licensed in Rhode

14

Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut, and had been employed with the former Cunningham &

15

Son's Plumbing and Heating Company. He was also a lifelong member of Local #51 Plumbers

16

and Pipefitters; and

17

     WHEREAS, A faithful communicant, Mr. Cunningham was one of the original members

18

of St. Martha's Church in East Providence. He was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed golf and

19

fast pitched softball; and

     WHEREAS, Active in the community, Mr. Cunningham was a former member of both

2

the East Providence Zoning Board and the Tax Review Board, and had served as a past President

3

of the Kendbrin Swim & Tennis Club, and past President and charter member of the East

4

Providence Youth Hockey Association; and

5

     WHEREAS, James Cunningham was a devoted family man. He had been a loving

6

caregiver to his wife Mary for many years and a cherished father. One of his greatest joys had

7

been spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and he will be dearly missed;

8

now, therefore be it

9

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

10

Providence Plantations hereby extends deepest condolences on the passing of James P.

11

Cunningham, Sr.; and be it further

12

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

13

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Mary Terry McGovern and Family, James

14

Cunningham Jr., and Colleen Milazzo and Family.
