RELATING TO STATE AFFAIRS AND GOVERNMENT -- STATE POLICE | |

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: | |
1 | SECTION 1. Section 42-28-28 of the General Laws in Chapter 42-28 entitled "State |
2 | Police" is hereby amended to read as follows: |
3 | 42-28-28. Persons admissible to school. |
4 | (a) No person shall be admitted as a candidate to the municipal police training school unless |
5 | he or she is a citizen of the United States and a resident of the state of Rhode Island and shall have |
6 | reached the age of eighteen (18) years; nor shall any person be admitted who shall not have first |
7 | been certified by a physician as being physically and mentally sound on an examination made |
8 | within one month prior to the acceptance of his or her candidacy. |
9 | (b) No educational requirement beyond high school graduation or the awarding of a high |
10 | school equivalency diploma (GED) shall be required for admission of a candidate to the municipal |
11 | police training school. |
12 | SECTION 2. Chapter 42-28 of the General Laws entitled "State Police" is hereby amended |
13 | by adding thereto the following section: |
14 | 42-28-30.1. Educational requirement prior to police appointment. |
15 | Except for completion of a course of instruction at a police academy or training school, no |
16 | municipality shall request or require that any applicant for appointment or employment as a police |
17 | officer be required to complete any education beyond high school graduation or the awarding of a |
18 | high school equivalency diploma (GED). |
