RELATING TO STATE AFFAIRS AND GOVERNMENT -- STATE POLICE

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Section 42-28-28 of the General Laws in Chapter 42-28 entitled "State

Police" is hereby amended to read as follows:

     42-28-28. Persons admissible to school.

4

     (a) No person shall be admitted as a candidate to the municipal police training school unless

5

he or she is a citizen of the United States and a resident of the state of Rhode Island and shall have

6

reached the age of eighteen (18) years; nor shall any person be admitted who shall not have first

7

been certified by a physician as being physically and mentally sound on an examination made

8

within one month prior to the acceptance of his or her candidacy.

     (b) No educational requirement beyond high school graduation or the awarding of a high

10

school equivalency diploma (GED) shall be required for admission of a candidate to the municipal

11

police training school.

     SECTION 2. Chapter 42-28 of the General Laws entitled "State Police" is hereby amended

13

by adding thereto the following section:

14

     42-28-30.1. Educational requirement prior to police appointment.

15

     Except for completion of a course of instruction at a police academy or training school, no

16

municipality shall request or require that any applicant for appointment or employment as a police

17

officer be required to complete any education beyond high school graduation or the awarding of a

18

high school equivalency diploma (GED).

     SECTION 3. This act shall take effect upon passage.

     This act would prohibit an educational requirement beyond high school graduation (or

equivalency) for attendance at the municipal police training school or for appointment as a

3

municipal police officer.

     This act would take effect upon passage.
