H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

URGING THE CUMBERLAND SCHOOL DEPARTMENT TO RESOLVE THE CURRENT

BUSING DISPUTE

     WHEREAS, To date, the Cumberland School Department has failed to come to a student

2

busing agreement with respect to the transportation of pupils in grades kindergarten through

3

twelve (K-12) for the school year 2020-2021; and

4

     WHEREAS, Pupils in grades kindergarten through twelve (K-12) were previously

5

required to walk one-fourth of a mile to a bus stop and are currently required to walk three-

6

fourths of a mile to a bus stop; and

7

     WHEREAS, In accordance with ยง 16-21.1-2, it is in the interest of public safety, health,

8

and welfare for pupils in grades kindergarten through twelve (K-12), or in special education

9

programs, who attend public schools, to be provided bus transportation to the school or facility

10

which the pupil attends, within the region in which the pupil resides, by the school committee of

11

the city or town within which the pupil resides; and

12

     WHEREAS, It is in the best interest of the public that the Cumberland School

13

Department comes to an agreement with respect to the transportation of pupils in grades

14

kindergarten through twelve (K-12), on or before August 15, 2020, so that there is minimal

15

disruption in the transportation of pupils; now, therefore be it

16

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby

17

urges the Cumberland School Department to negotiate with all deliberate speed and in good faith

18

to come to an agreement with respect to the transportation of pupils in grades kindergarten

19

through twelve (K-12), on or before August 15, 2020; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Paul DiModica, Chair of the Cumberland

3

School Committee, and Robert Mitchell, Superintendent of the Cumberland School Department.
