EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF COLONEL GORDON | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of Gordon |
2 | Mitchell Bruce Livingston, beloved husband of the late Lucille Kavanaugh, whom he had married |
3 | in 1950, and Anne Russell Maxwell, whom he married in 1982. He was the father of Gordon |
4 | Mitchell Bruce Livingston, Jr., Jody McKernan Livingston, Mary Allerton Livingston, and |
5 | Phoebe Hayes Livingston. He was also the very proud grandfather of Kavanaugh McKernan |
6 | Livingston, Katharine Livingston Luther, and Oliver Bernard Lopez; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Born in Richmond, Virginia, Mr. Livingston was the son of Edith and |
8 | Bernard Livingston, and the brother of the late Joan Zshoche. During his youth, he had earned the |
9 | rank of Eagle Scout; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Mr. Livingston enlisted in the United State Marine Corps by altering his |
11 | birthday by six months so he could serve our country that much sooner. He served with honor |
12 | and valor during World War II and later in China. He was what is known as a "mustang", which |
13 | is a marine who rises through the enlisted ranks to become an officer; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Upon returning stateside, Mr. Livingston graduated from the Severn School |
15 | and attended Johns Hopkins University. He left college to serve in the Korean War as a Captain. |
16 | He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with Combat "V" and was promoted to the rank of |
17 | Colonel; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Upon his return from Korea, Mr. Livingston graduated from and received |
19 | his Master's degree from George Washington University. He returned to combat and fought in |

1 | Vietnam where he was awarded a second Bronze Star, and was eminently proud of his duty as |
2 | Commander of the Ninth Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan, shortly before his retirement in |
3 | 1974; and |
4 | WHEREAS, As a civilian, Mr. Livingston moved to Rhode Island where he worked as a |
5 | boatbuilder and marine surveyor until well into his eighties. In addition, he served as President of |
6 | the Jamestown Senior Center, Commander of Post 9447 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Senior |
7 | Warden of Trinity Church, Newport, and was a member of the Conanicut Yacht Club and the |
8 | New York Yacht Club; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Colonel Gordon Livingston was a steadfast gentleman and honorable and |
10 | dedicated veteran, who left this world a far better place because of his life’s endeavors. He |
11 | enriched the lives of all who knew him and he will be dearly missed; now, therefore be it |
12 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
13 | hereby expresses our deepest sympathies on the passing of Colonel Gordon Mitchell Bruce |
14 | Livingston (USMC, Retired); and be it further |
15 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
16 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Anne Russell Maxwell and Family. |
