HONORING ROSS CHEIT FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF | |

1 | WHEREAS, In preparation for what has become an accomplished and wide-ranging |
2 | career, Ross Cheit graduated with honors from Williams College in political economy and a |
3 | coordinate major in environmental studies. Continuing his education, he earned a law degree and |
4 | PhD in public policy at the University of California, Berkeley; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Mr. Cheit subsequently served as clerk for Justice Hans Linde of the Oregon |
6 | Supreme Court, and later practiced law with Duane, Lyman, and Seltzer in Berkeley; and |
7 | WHEREAS, In 1987, Mr. Cheit joined the faculty at Brown University, where he is |
8 | currently a Professor of Political Science and International and Public Affairs in the Political |
9 | Science Department, Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs; and |
10 | WHEREAS, In 2004, Mr. Cheit was appointed to the Rhode Island Ethics Commission |
11 | by Governor Donald Carcieri, and in 2011, he was elected Chair. The Commission employs |
12 | numerous lawyers and three full-time investigators who examine the complicated matters and |
13 | complaints brought before the Commission; and |
14 | WHEREAS, In addition to his service on the Commission and at Brown, Dr. Cheit |
15 | authored and published the book The Witch Hunt Narrative: Politics, Psychology, and the Sexual |
16 | Abuse of Children; and |
17 | WHEREAS, For the past fifteen years, the citizenry of Rhode Island have been accorded |
18 | the wisdom, integrity, and insight of Ross Cheit as he served as the key watchdog over the |
19 | standards of conduct for all public officials and employees in our state and his efforts will be |

1 | greatly missed; now, therefore be it |
2 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
3 | hereby honors and thanks Ross Cheit for his dedicated service on the Rhode Island Ethics |
4 | Commission. We moreover wish him continued success, fulfilment, and good health; and be it |
5 | further |
6 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
7 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Dr. Ross Cheit. |
