EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF THE HONORABLE MARY CERRA | |

1 | WHEREAS, It is with profound sadness that this Senate has learned of the passing of |
2 | Mary Cerra, the beloved wife of the late Fred Cerra, cherished mother of Denise Martino and her |
3 | husband, Edward, doting grandmother of Anthony Martino and his wife, Vanessa, great- |
4 | grandmother of Jake Martino and Anthony Martino, and a well-respected former member of the |
5 | Rhode Island House of Representatives; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Mrs. Cerra was the devoted daughter of |
7 | the late Alfonso and Concetta Iovino, and the loving sister of the late Frank Iovino, Palma Caprio, |
8 | Louise Parrillo and Elvira Cooper. She was a graduate of Providence public schools and had |
9 | taken courses at CCRI and the University of Rhode Island; and |
10 | WHEREAS, A hard working woman, Mrs. Cerra was the former owner-operator of |
11 | Denise’s Beauty Salon, served from 1971 through 1986 as a Johnston Welfare Director, and was |
12 | actively involved in myriad organizations and community affairs for many years; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Cerra began her distinguished years of public service as an elected |
14 | Town Committeewoman, a title she held for 27 years. In 1987, she was elected as a Johnston |
15 | Town Councilwoman representing District 1, and in 2000, she began serving in the Rhode Island |
16 | House of Representatives from District 55, which later became District 42, representing |
17 | constituents in portions of Cranston and Johnston; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Our thoughts and hearts hold great empathy and sorrow for the family of |
19 | Mary Cerra. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who enriched |
20 | the lives of all who knew her and she will be dearly missed in the community; now, therefore be |

2 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
3 | hereby expresses its deepest sympathies on the passing of the Honorable Mary Cerra. She will |
4 | forever be remembered by this Senate and the people of Rhode Island for her commitment to her |
5 | community and the people of this state; and be it further |
6 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
7 | transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Denise Martino and Family. |
