RELATING TO PUBLIC OFFICERS AND EMPLOYEES -- MERIT SYSTEM

     

     Introduced By: Senators Ciccone, Lombardo, Lombardi, and Goodwin

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Section 36-4-11 of the General Laws in Chapter 36-4 entitled "Merit System"

is hereby amended to read as follows:

     36-4-11. Allocation of positions to classes within plan.

4

     (a) After the adoption of the classification plan by the governor, the personnel administrator

5

shall allocate every position in the classified service to one of the classes established by the plan.

6

Thereafter, whenever new positions are authorized and created, whenever the duties and

7

responsibilities of existing positions change, or whenever the classification plan is amended, the

8

personnel administrator shall allocate or reallocate the affected positions and shall determine the

9

status of employees affected by the action in accordance with the personnel rules.

10

     (b) Whenever a class of position is advanced from one pay range to another, any employee

11

currently serving in the classification affected shall be advanced to the same step in the new pay

12

range. The employee shall retain their same civil service status and their existing salary step

13

consideration date.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

EXPLANATION

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

     This act would allow an employee in a class advanced from one pay range to another, to

2

maintain the same step in the new pay range, as well as the same civil service status and their

3

currently earned salary step consideration date.

4

     This act would take effect upon passage.
