S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING JAMES F. DEAN ON HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE RHODE

ISLAND PUBLIC TRANSIT AUTHORITY AFTER FORTY-FIVE YEARS OF DEVOTED

AND MERITORIOUS SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, James Dean began his distinguished service with the Rhode Island Public

2

Transit Authority (RIPTA) as a Bus Operator on March 17, 1975. He transferred to the position

3

of Transportation Clerk on September 4, 1976, and thanks to his tireless work ethic, attention to

4

detail, and abiding passion for serving the public, he was frequently promoted throughout his

5

career; and

6

     WHEREAS, Mr. Dean was promoted to the position of Assistant Superintendent of the

7

Elmwood Garage on June 30, 1979, and was made the General Superintendent on January 24,

8

1984. His duties as General Superintendent included deploying personnel, assigning buses,

9

preparing payroll and applying department policies as necessary; and

10

     WHEREAS, Mr. Dean was promoted on July 8, 1978, to the position of Director of

11

Transportation, a title he held until July 1, 2005, when he was named the Assistant General

12

Manager of Transportation. On July 1, 2015, Mr. Dean was further promoted to the position of

13

Executive Director of Transportation, his last position at RIPTA before his retirement; and

14

     WHEREAS, Mr. Dean’s duties as the RIPTA Executive Director of Transportation

15

included monitoring bus operator performance and preparedness, providing policy direction and

16

enforcement of safety guidelines for Bus Operators, researching and answering inquiries from

17

RIPTA passengers and RIPTA personnel, and providing public relations services and outreach

18

programs related to transportation operations; now, therefore be it

19

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

hereby congratulates James Dean on his retirement from the Rhode Island Public Transit

2

Authority after forty-five years of devoted and meritorious service to the citizens of Rhode Island;

3

and be it further

4

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

5

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. James Dean.
