EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF WILLIAM STRINGFELLOW | |

1 | WHEREAS, William Stringfellow, an iconic and beloved figure within the East |
2 | Providence and Rhode Island football communities, passed away on February 13, 2020. He was |
3 | the devoted husband of the late Sheila Stringfellow, to whom he had been married for sixty-one |
4 | years; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Mr. Stringfellow was born in East Providence, the son of the late William |
6 | and Jennie Stringfellow. A lifelong East Providence resident, Mr. Stringfellow graduated from |
7 | East Providence High School in 1945, where he played football, wrestled, and was a member of |
8 | the school band. After high school, he attended Wilbraham Academy and later graduated from |
9 | Springfield College in 1950; and |
10 | WHEREAS, After college, Mr. Stringfellow served our nation with honor and distinction |
11 | as a member of the United States Army. Upon receiving his honorable discharge, he began his |
12 | exemplary public service career with a teaching position at St. Dunstan’s. He subsequently taught |
13 | at Central Junior High School (now Edward R. Martin Middle School); and |
14 | WHEREAS, Soon thereafter, Mr. Stringfellow began his legendary career as a teacher |
15 | and coach at East Providence High School. He taught physical education and health, and was a |
16 | renowned football coach for the Townies, winning State Championships in 1969, 1970, 1979 and |
17 | 1980; and |
18 | WHEREAS, In 1977, Mr. Stringfellow was appointed to the position of Athletic Director |
19 | for all city schools. He later served as East Providence’s first City Recreation Director for |
20 | fourteen years, and after his retirement, he served as the Bishop Hendricken freshman football |

1 | coach for ten years; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Mr. Stringfellow is survived by his children, William Stringfellow, III, and |
3 | his wife, Debbie, Arthur Stringfellow and his wife, Christen, Peter Stringfellow and his wife, |
4 | Kristen, Paul Stringfellow and his wife, Sheila, Todd Stringfellow and his wife, Stacey, Jonathan |
5 | Stringfellow and his wife, Annie, and Ann Taglianetti and her husband, Ron. He is also survived |
6 | by his twenty-five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He |
7 | was the brother of the late Thomas Stringfellow; now, therefore be it |
8 | RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
9 | hereby expresses its condolences on the passing of Mr. William Stringfellow; and be it further |
10 | RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
11 | transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to William Stringfellow, III, Arthur Stringfellow, |
12 | Peter Stringfellow, Paul Stringfellow, Todd Stringfellow, Jonathan Stringfellow, and Ann |
13 | Taglianetti. |
